Custom Bracing Q&A

What is custom bracing?

A medical brace is a type of durable medical equipment (DME) that supports a specific body part to heal an injury, reduce pain, or prevent an injury.

Custom bracing refers to medical braces that are custom-made to match your orthopedic needs and body. Cascade Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Center, P.C., provides custom bracing for the ankle, knees, wrist, and shoulder.

These orthopedic braces are placed outside your body to improve the function and structure of the supportive muscles and bones for the body part that needs it.

Who needs custom bracing?

Dr. Stanley determines if you need custom bracing based on your diagnosis. Many orthopedic conditions and injuries benefit from the support you get with custom bracing.

You may need custom bracing to manage your:

  • Ankle sprain
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Arthritis
  • Tendonitis
  • Bursitis
  • Injured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)
  • Injured medial collateral ligament (MCL)
  • Meniscal injury
  • Rotator cuff injury
  • Joint dislocation
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

Dr. Stanley offers custom bracing to support healing of an injury or fracture, to reduce inflammation, provide support for instability, or improve function following surgery.

You may also need custom bracing to support a previously injured joint and prevent another injury. Or, an abnormality that affects the mechanics of your joint may benefit from the extra support of a custom brace.

What are custom orthotics?

Custom orthotics are a type of DME for the feet. Cascade Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Center, P.C., also provides custom orthotics to support healing, reduce pain, or improve foot mechanics. Custom orthotics may also correct the positioning of your feet to improve function.

There are two types of custom orthotics:

Functional orthotics

Functional orthotics aim to fix an abnormality in the foot. Dr. Stanley uses rigid materials, such as plastic or graphite, to create these functional orthotics. He may use them to treat shin splints, tendonitis, or plantar fasciitis.

Accommodative orthotics

Accommodative orthotics are made from soft materials and give your feet cushioning and support. Dr. Stanley may use accommodative orthotics to prevent ulcers or calluses in people with diabetes.

Custom bracing and orthotics provide extra support for your body.
