The
most common joints to be replaced are the hip, knee, and shoulder,
but sometimes hand, finger, or elbow joints need replacing. Techniques
and technology are always evolving and our surgeons stay abreast of
these newest developments.
Currently
there is a lot of interest in what is known as MIS or minimally
invasive surgery for joint replacement. This entails performing
the surgery through a smaller incision with less injury to muscles,
sometimes translating into a quicker, more comfortable recovery. Its
not appropriate for all patients though.
Our
providers offer this in selected cases.
The
Copeland Humeral Resurfacing Head is a minimally invasive
joint replacement. Unlike a total shoulder implant, it is designed
to cap only the top of the humerus reducing bone and cartilage removal.
Thus making it much more conservative than total joint implants.
For appropriate patients it can significantly reduce the recovery
time as well as pain.
Zimmer
ML Taper system and Biomet Metal-on-Metal m2a system are commonly
used implants for
Total Hip replacement.
